JANUARY 2000

Fred Gaines became a member of the Board of Directors of the Valley Community Legal Foundation of the San Fernando Valley Bar Association. The Foundation provides scholarships to needy and deserving students, and sponsors programs on domestic violence, victims rights and public safety issues.

FEBRUARY 2000

In February, Rebecca Thompson became Of Counsel to Gaines & Stacey LLP. Rebecca is a graduate of the University of Southern California and of the University of Notre Dame Law School. Rebecca specializes in environmental law matters and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Environmental Law Section.

MARCH 2000

Over the past twelve months Sherman Stacey has been involved in the negotiation, documentation and closing of over $150 million in real estate transactions in California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah and Arizona.

APRIL 2000

In April, Fred Gaines delivered a guest lecture in land use and zoning law at the UCLA School of Law. Fred discussed takings and exaction litigation, and specifically the impact of Ehrlich v. Culver City and Landgate v. California Coastal Commission, two landmark cases in which Fred had acted as lead trial counsel.

MAY 2000

The May 2000 issue of The Planning Report featured an interview with Fred Gaines on planning and cityhood issues in the San Fernando Valley. Fred is a Contributing Editor to The Planning Report.

JUNE 2000

On June 13, 2000, Rebecca Thompson served as Moderator for a Los Angeles County Bar Association Environmental Law Seminar entitled "The New Simulprobe Sampling Technology and Its Impact on Cost Recovery Litigation."

JULY 2000

Fred Gaines was elected President of the Calabasas Library Commission. A former Chair of the Los Angeles County Library Commission, Fred has been a member of the City Commission since 1998.

AUGUST 2000

The August 6, 2000, Edition of the Los Angeles Times featured an editorial piece regarding the Los Angeles Unified School District's eminent domain policies written by Fred Gaines. The article was critical of LAUSD's targeting of viable businesses and commercial properties for new school sites.

SEPTEMBER 2000

In September, Gaines & Stacey LLP client Walgreens Drugstores, represented by Fred Gaines, received approval for a new 15,000 square foot store with drive thru pharmacy from the newly created City of Los Angeles South Valley Area Planning Commission.

OCTOBER 2000

Fred Gaines was a featured speaker at the 19th Select Conference on Industry Litigation hosted by the California Building Industry Association at the Miramonte Resort in Indian Wells. Fred spoke on recent developments in the law affecting coastal property owners.

NOVEMBER 2000

In November, Lisa Weinberg successfully represented Gaines & Stacey LLP client QC Construction in obtaining final approval for a new major mixed-use project from the South Pasadena City Council. The project will be the centerpiece of the City's Mission Street redevelopment area.

DECEMBER 2000

Fred Gaines was elected Executive Vice Chair and Chair-Elect of the Valley Industry and Commerce Association ("VICA"). VICA has over 300 members and is considered one of the most influential business advocacy organizations in Southern California.
