FEBRUARY 2003Managing Partner Fred Gaines was elected to a one year term on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. The LAACC is the State of California's largest Chamber of Commerce with over 1,300 member companies. MARCH 2003Nanci Stacey hosted United States Deputy Secretary of the Interior Steven Griles for an equestrian trial ride in the mountains above Palm Springs on behalf of our client the Desert Riders. Gaines & Stacey LLP represents the Desert Riders in their efforts to keep the historic riding trails in the Palm Springs area open for public use. APRIL 2003Gaines & Stacey LLP client Dorothy Rose, represented by Rebecca Thompson, was successful in winning Summary Judgment on all claims in the matter Northridge Commerce Center v. Rose. The case involved allegations that a former shopping center owner was responsible for certain environmental contamination found on the property. MAY 2003Fred Gaines, in his role as Chairman of the Valley Industry and Commerce Association ("VICA"), led a delegation of Los Angeles business leaders on a lobbying trip to Washington, D.C. Fred met personally with U.S. Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, White House staff, and four local area Congressmen. JUNE 2003On June 6, 2003, Fred Gaines was a featured speaker at the annual San Fernando Valley Bar Association Construction Defect Law Seminar. Fred's presentation was entitled "The New Construction Defect Law: Mandatory Mediation and Contractor's Right to Fix." JULY 2003The July 2003 issue of the Metro Investment Report featured an extensive interview with Managing Partner Fred Gaines regarding land use, development and governance issues in the San Fernando Valley. AUGUST 2003Kimberly Rible graduated as a member of the Valley Leadership Institute ("VLI") Class of 2003. VLI provides leadership training and public policy education for an annually selected class of future community leaders. SEPTEMBER 2003Gaines & Stacey LLP client GH Capital LLC, represented by Lisa Weinberg, was successful in defeating a court challenge to a new 112 unit senior housing development in Tarzana. In Tarzana Tower v. City of Los Angeles, a neighboring property owner had challenged the City's approval of zoning entitlements and certification of the project's environmental review. OCTOBER 2003Gaines & Stacey LLP client Patriot Homes, represented by Fred Gaines, received approval for a zone change from the Thousand Oaks City Council to allow for the development of 46 new homes on the site of the former Thousand Oaks Racquet Club. NOVEMBER 2003On November 2, 2003, the first annual Gaines & Stacey LLP Cup was awarded to the Capital Crew of Sacramento, winners of the Men's Junior Eight rowing race at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival. Sherman and Nanci Stacey, both avid rowers, served as hosts for the event. DECEMBER 2003Alicia Bartley joined Gaines & Stacey LLP as an Associate.
