Jazzed-up State of City address delivered in Calabasas

Excellent community programs, first-class municipal services and devoted citizen volunteers: They all contributed to the success of Calabasas in 2013, Mayor Fred Gaines said during the 16th annual State of the City address.

The Jan. 15 event was co-hosted by the city and the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce.

“Calabasas is home, and it’s a great home. It’s because of you,” Gaines told the audience.

The presentation at Calabasas High School’s Performing Arts Education Center included performances by a student jazz combo and Unstrumental, a CHS a cappella group, along with a reception, and desserts created by the schools’ culinary class.

During the address, Gaines recognized Brian Ludmer, the technical director at CHS who is recovering from a wound he received in the Nov. 1 shooting at LAX.

The 2013 Calabasas Citizen of the Year award went to Ellen Pangarliotas for her commitment to improving the quality of life in Calabasas and her vision and work toward the creation and success of the Calabasas Library.
